I did keep coming back to the fact that writing a sonnet is not an easy task (I've tried writing various poetic forms), and to write sixty of them is indeed a labor of love. The poetry may not necessarily be something to be picked up to be challenged in a new way. The sonnets carry a sense of hope, assurance, and a sure faith. After reading the book, it is clear the author speaks from her own heart and speaks with an authentic voice. The author stays true to the sonnet style, while amplifying or exploring a certain characteristic, situation, or story inspired by the Biblical reference. For example, "Wisdom" is one of the sections, and includes six sonnets.
The book is divided into ten sections, or topics, and includes several sonnets under each section. Each poem begins with a scripture reference that serves as inspiration for the sonnet. The author writes sonnets in Shakespearean style, and explains the form and rhyming scheme in the beginning of the book. I will look forward to more work by Dona Wilding Haws. Sonnets of Faith will prove to be a cherished addition to your library. It offers a rare, and much needed opportunity for all followers of the Savior. This book, with its depth in word and its beauty in art, invites the reader to be still and ponder the messages of Christ. Interestingly, I have found on many occasions that visitors in my home have instinctively reached for the book and quietly become captivated with its message. I have displayed a copy of this beautiful book in my living room. Dan Burr’s artwork brings a feeling of reverence and contemplation to the pages. The illustrations are equal to this great work. As the Savior’s parables bring lasting imagery, these sonnets also create images that will endure…truly Sonnets of Faith. Each sonnet offers a unique insight that lingers in the heart, allowing us to continue to ponder the personal significance long after closing the pages. The author uses passages from the Bible to prepare our minds for these masterfully written sonnets.
